Task 1

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

Snowflakes are ice crystals which fall through the Earth’s atmosphere as snow. People like to think that every snowflake has a unique shape. However, it’s not true. While snowflakes may look different, they can still be classified into eight groups and about eighty different variants. Some scientists have done a lot of research into making a kind of a catalogue of snowflakes.

The most typical patterns for a snowflake are needles, columns, plates and rimes. The shape and the pattern of a snowflake largely depend on the weather conditions. The study of snowflakes has identified that long, thin needle-like ice crystals form at around zero, while a lower temperature will lead to very flat crystals. Further changes in temperature as a snowflake falls determine more complicated shapes of snowflakes. The size of a snowflake also depends on the air temperature.

  • explain the choice of the illustrations for the project by briefly describing them and noting the differences;

  • mention the advantages (1–2) of the two ways to spend the weekend;
  • mention the disadvantages (1–2) of the two ways to spend the weekend;
  • express your opinion on the subject of the project – say which way of spending the weekend presented in the pictures you prefer and why.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Hi Ann! I’ve found a couple of nice pictures for our ‘Ideal Weekend’ project. I can’t send them right now, but I’ll describe them and share a few ideas.

One picture shows a girl sitting comfortably on a sofa, with a cat beside her. She has headphones on, and it looks like she’s vibing to her favourite music. The other captures three friends riding bikes along a sunny forest path, enjoying each other’s company. I’ve chosen these pictures because they illustrate two different ways to spend an ideal weekend – either relaxing alone or sharing time with friends.

Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages. Spending a weekend alone offers complete freedom and flexibility, and there’s no need to compromise with others’ preferences. But for outgoing people, a weekend alone can be difficult to enjoy and may feel like wasted time.

A weekend shared with friends, on the other hand, is great for socialising, shared experiences, and lasting memories, yet scheduling and agreeing on activities can sometimes be a challenge.

Personally, I prefer spending my weekends with friends because nothing makes an ideal weekend better than the company of people I enjoy.

(Personally, I prefer relaxing alone at weekends, as this is my chance to enjoy some me time and avoid social stress – my ideal way to recharge my batteries.)

Anyway, these are my ideas for our project. Let me know what you think. Bye!
