Sophia is a robot with many abilities. She speaks, jokes, sings and even makes art. She is able to imitate 62 human expressions using artificial intelligence (AI), facial recognition and a connection to the World Wide Web. She is so advanced and lifelike that in 2017 she was given Saudi Arabian citizenship, becoming the world’s first robot citizen.
She was developed by the Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. With her incredible human likeness and expressiveness, you would be forgiven for mistaking her for a human – until you notice that the back of her skull reveals the machinery inside.
Since her creation in 2016, Sophia has become the world’s most recognized humanoid social robot. She performs at events around the planet as a messenger, celebrity, and ambassador representing the human-technological future.
