People around the world celebrate the start of a year on New Year’s Day. It is one of the oldest holidays. In the Western cultures of Europe, North America, South America, and Australia, most people celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1. People of other places and cultures observe the new year at other times depending on their different calendars.
Many traditions and customs surround New Year’s Day in Western countries. On the night before, called New Year’s Eve, people have noisy parties and grand feasts. They stay up late and count down the seconds until midnight. Fireworks displays are often organized, and people will go outside at midnight to watch them. At midnight it is traditional to kiss or shake hands and wish other people “Happy New Year.” Many people make New Year’s resolutions, or promises to themselves. They see New Year’s Day as a chance to make a fresh start.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.
I have found some photos for our school project “New Year Celebrations” and now I would like to share my thoughts with you.
In picture 1 there is a young couple and their three children. They are sitting on the floor next to their New Year tree and exchanging New Year presents. All of them are smiling and look very happy. Picture 2 shows a merry company of young people. They may be friends having a New Year party at their friend’s place. They have sparklers in their hands, some of them are wearing red hats and sweaters with festive patterns. These pictures illustrate different ways of celebrating New Year, namely in a family circle and with friends so they are perfectly suitable for our project.
No doubt, each way of celebrating this holiday has some advantages. While at home, people can enjoy a warm and cosy atmosphere and show attention and love to each other. Celebrating with friends helps people become closer and get to know each other better.
However, both ways of New Year celebrations have certain drawbacks. Staying at home can be boring because it’s the place where we are constantly with the same people and in the same environment. The main disadvantage of celebrating New Year with friends is that sometimes there may be people or things we don’t like.
Personally, I prefer to celebrate the beginning of a new year at home because I’m not a party animal. Not to be bored, we can plan some entertainment and activities in advance.
Well, Jane, do you approve of my choice of the photos? Please let me know what you think about them.
