Task 1

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

One of the reasons why species become endangered is a loss of habitat. It can happen naturally. Dinosaurs, for instance, lost their habitat about 65 million years ago. The hot, dry climate changed very quickly, most likely because of an asteroid striking the Earth. The dinosaurs were unable to adapt to this new, cooler habitat. Dinosaurs became endangered, then extinct.

Human activity can also contribute to a loss of habitat. It is by far the biggest cause of habitat loss. The problem is particularly acute in Australia where, thanks to human impacts, more mammal species have been lost in the past 200 years than in all other continents combined. One key measure is the establishment of protected areas where human activity is restricted in order to conserve existing ecosystems and wildlife.

  • mention the advantages (1–2) of the two hobbies;
  • mention the disadvantages (1–2) of the two hobbies;
  • express your opinion on the subject of the project – which of these hobbies you’d prefer and why.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Suggested answer

Hi Alex! I’ve found two photos that could work well for our school project on hobby ideas.

One of the photos shows a happy girl who is playing the guitar in the countryside on a beautiful summer day. The other one depicts a girl riding a horse. She might be practising her riding skills or simply enjoying this experience. The photos perfectly illustrate two different hobbies, such as playing the guitar, a musical hobby, and horseback riding, which is a physically active pursuit.

Both hobbies have some advantages. For example, a great advantage of playing the guitar is that it can be a fantastic way to express yourself creatively, and all you need is a guitar to do it anywhere. On the other hand, horseback riding is a great way to stay active, and it can also be an effective stress buster.

There are also some disadvantages to consider. For example, playing the guitar can be difficult to learn and it takes time and practice to become good at it. As for horseback riding as a hobby, it can be dangerous if proper safety measures aren’t taken. And it’s an expensive hobby, I’d say.

Personally, I think I’d prefer to take up horseback riding. I love being outside and I think it would be really fun to learn how to ride a horse.

Well, that’s all for now. Let me know what you think about these photos for our project. Bye!
