For many people airports are a nightmare – long queues when you check in and go through security and an even longer wait if your flight is delayed. But there are some airports where you can actually enjoy yourself. All good airports have excellent facilities for business people and children, free Wi-fi, restaurants, cafés, and shops. But the best airports have much more.

If you like computer games, you’ll never be bored at Hong Kong international airport – there are dozens of free Playstations all over the terminals! It’s also good for people with no sense of direction – there are ‘Airport Ambassadors’ in red coats, who help you to get from one place to another. Another unusual airport is located in Singapore. This airport has a rooftop swimming pool and a free sightseeing tour for people who have at least five hours to wait for their connecting flight.

Student: I really like my teachers and a friendly atmosphere. I also like the opportunities my school provides for extracurricular activities.

Interviewer: What motivates children to do well at school?

Interviewer: What do you think of a school uniform? Is it a good idea?

Interviewer: Do you think homework is necessary for effective learning?

Student: Yes, I think homework is necessary and important for effective learning. It helps children develop good study habits and practise new skills.

Interviewer: What would your school be better without?

Task 4

Imagine that you and your friend are doing a school project “Volunteer opportunities”. You have found some photos to illustrate it but for technical reasons you cannot send them now. Leave a voice message to your friend explaining your choice of the photos and sharing some ideas about the project. In 2.5 minutes be ready to:

  • explain the choice of the illustrations for the project by briefly describing them and noting the differences;
  • mention the advantages (1–2) of the two types of volunteer work;
  • mention the disadvantages (1–2) of the two types of volunteer work;
  • express your opinion on the subject of the project – which type of volunteer work presented in the pictures you’d prefer and why.

You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Suggested answer

Hi Alex! I’ve found two photos to illustrate our project on volunteer opportunities. Let me share some ideas behind these photos through this voice message.

The first one shows two girls working together to clean up a park or forest area, which looks like an environmental volunteer opportunity. The other one captures two girls who are spending their volunteer time, taking care of animals at a shelter. I think the photos are a good choice for our project because they depict two different types of volunteer activities: helping the environment and working with unwanted pets.

We could make our project even more interesting if we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of these types of volunteer work. For example, volunteering for environmental causes can improve the surroundings and create a sense of community, while volunteering at an animal shelter can make a significant impact on the lives of homeless animals who require care and support.

When it comes to the downsides, there are some to consider. When working to help the environment, it can be discouraging for volunteers if the area gets dirty again quickly. As for volunteering at an animal shelter, it can be physically and emotionally demanding, particularly when dealing with sick or injured animals.

Personally, I’d prefer to be an animal care volunteer because animals have a special place in my heart. I always want to help them in any way I can.

Well, that’s it for now. I wonder what you think about these photos for our project. Let me know. Bye!
